Sports Injuries

Sport injuries are often sustained whilst playing sports. They often vary in severity due to the mechanism of injury. They range form knee and ankle injuries to shoulder dislocations. Not stretching and having a good warm up can also lead to many injuries as the body is not prepared for the exercise.

Management (first 48 hours)

If you have suffered an acute sprain it is important to consult a physiotherapist for treatment within the first 24-48 hours. However putting ice packs on the ankle for 20 to 30 minutes every 3 to 4 hours for the first 2 or 3 days and anti-inflammatory medicine will assist recovery. Your physiotherapist will prescribe a rehabilitation program.

How long?

The length of recovery depends on many factors such as your age, health, and if you have had a previous injury. Recovery time also depends on the severity of the sprain. A mild sprain may recover within a few weeks, whereas a severe sprain may take 6 weeks or longer to recover. Recovery also depends on what anatomical structure was torn.

An injury is a setback and is disruptive to normal training routines, so having your injury looked at immediately is important
